Horsetail Milkweed
Horsetail Milkweed - Asclepias subverticillata - Perennial
Also called 'Whorled Milkweed' as the lance-shaped leaves are arranged along the stem in a whorl. Beautiful white flower heads branch out from the stem, multiple flowers per branch. Grows to 1-2'. This is an airy thing, I've always thought it was beautiful. All Milkweeds are beneficial to pollinators but native bees particularly like this one.
Flower heads are beautiful up close, described as 'white hoods with horns present.' So cool.
Plant 1/4" or less in spring, summer or fall. However, it would like a bit of winter. Stratify in the fridge for a couple of weeks before planting or plant in the fall and winter. It likes sandy or rocky soil and can be found in sagebrush country, ditches and open Ponderosa Pine communities.
Collected in northern New Mexico in the wild wind but I did it anyway.
