Wax Currant - Ribes cereum - Perennial

This wild currant grows all over the land we call home and it was the first wild fruit I ever made jams and jellies with here on the mountain. It's a beautiful red colored fruit and the jelly was gorgeous! They are small but they were worth the effort.

I know it's spring when this currant is in bloom - the drooping, tubular pink and white flowers smell incredible, especially after a rain. We have a huge one in the driveway that we always admire in spring.

Grows 1.5-6'.

Plant in fall or early winter or cold moist stratify for 45 days. Seed comes in dried fruit and there are multiple seeds in one berry. They come up in my overwintered pots and other containers, easy to grow from seed.

Native.
