Russet Buffalo Berry
Russet Buffalo Berry - Shepherdia canadensis - Perennial
Grows high and low, I find it high. Stunning red berries along branching stems with silver/green leaves with a noticeable line down the center. I see it along the edge of the mixed forest and it does like partial shade.
This wild fruit will pucker you right up - it is bitter and sweet and it needs to be processed to be eaten - like as jam or sauce or mixed with other sweet berries.
Cold hardy, drought tolerant once established.
Plant in fall or early winter or cold moist stratify for 1-2 months. If you choose to stratify it yourself, scarification is helpful. You can rub the seed on sandpaper or use the edge of a file or other implement to nick the seed coat.
Seeds come as dried fruit. Multiple seeds in each berry, plant it whole or separate. Plant 1/4" deep.
Native.
