Three-Leaf Sumac
Three-Leaf Sumac - Rhus trilobata - Perennial
Edible, medicinal, beautiful. This large, branching shrub graces this land we call home. The birds and mountain critters love the berries. This plant will make a stand so give it room. Birds disperse the seeds and other animals poop them out. It can grow by suckers or seed and only the female plants produce fruit. Berries are sticky and are often called 'sourberry'. They have a citrus like flavor.
It branches prolifically and has taken over a trail in one of our gardens. If I prune it back, it just grows more vigorously. In the fall, the green leaves turn an incredible golden/apricot/red color - gorgeous!
To grow, cold moist stratify for 45 days or plant in fall or early winter. Plant 1/16th - 1/8" deep. Seeds come in the dried fruit, two seeds per berry. You can plant them whole or separate.
