Short's Milkvetch - Astragalus shortianus - Perennial

Very early bloomer for the mountains. It grows wild in the Labyrinth at our home and I l love to walk past it in the morning. So bright and cheerful! Very low-growing and sweet, it is also drought tolerant, hardy and highly adaptable. It grows high and low and I l love it because it is so early.

The silver/grey leaves are a beautiful contrast to the pinkish/purple flowers. The seed come in big ol' curved pea-like pods with a seam down them that easily crack open when dried.

Great rock garden or trough plant. Loves it sandy, gravely and can grow from the grasslands to the montane.

Sweeeeeet!

Stratify for 3 weeks to 1 month and scarify too. You can rub the seed on sandpaper or nick it with a file or knife and stratify in the fridge. Soaking right before planting helps too. Or....plant in fall or early winter.
