Red Saladbowl - Lactuca sativa - 50 days
Beautiful burgundy oak-shaped leaves mature quickly and bolt slowly. The last to bolt in the heat, this lettuce is highly adaptable. I've grown it for years in the deep shade, in baskets, in the open sun and in a winter cold frame. It is known for its heat tolerance - what a lettuce!
I always add it to my homemade mixes for it's gorgeous color and shape. It's just delicious too! A staple food in any garden.
Direct seed in spring, cover lightly and gently press the soil down. Keep moist through germination. This is a great lettuce for 'cut and come again' salads or you can start some indoors 2-3 weeks before the last frost and set out to mature into large looseleaf heads.
