NEW FOR 2026!!!

Fisher's Mountaineer Hubbard Squash!

Cucurbita maxima

75-95 days!

I'm over the moon about this new offer. I've been trying for several years to get enough seed to offer this nostalgic Hubbard Squash. I am a huge fan of Ken Fisher, the man who developed so many of our tried and true, 'sure thing', short-season varieties. (Candy Mountain Sweet Corn, Northern Bush Pumpkin, Prairie Fire tomato, etc...)

His work in Montana has helped us mountain folks in Colorado to grow all of the things we are told we cannot. High latitude and high altitude have a lot in common. Hot days, cold nights, and incredibly short seasons.

I grew these at 8,120' in the Wet Mountains of South Central Colorado. In the open.

They typically grow to 4-6 lbs. The pictures to the right are 1.5 - 2.5 lbs. I cut open and cooked the 4 pounders before I took their picture. Pictures of them cooked are in the Store. I also showed a picture of the hail damage that happened. The hail hit when they were very young, but the hard shell protected them and they matured anyway.

They often have that grey skin with a dusky orange hue. Some are dark green. They are pointy like a Hubbard. These are perfect for small families or for two. They hold in a cool place all winter.

People, this is a HUBBARD SQUASH and it made it at our elevation!!! Thank you Ken Fisher.

Squash prefer to be direct seeded. Plant to 1" deep and give them room to sprawl.

Please understand that this is a very small batch and these seeds are precious!! Packets will only give 10 seeds. This way, more mountain gardeners can enjoy them. Hopefully next year I can give more.

If you only grow one variety of C. maxima and you are away from other gardeners growing C. maxima's, you can save the seed and they will come true.

Oh and by the way, it was delicious.
