Globe Thistle

Echinops ritro

Hardy Perennial

Globe Thistle is easy to grow, hardy, drought tolerant and long lived. While I will never tell you anything is deer resistant, this plant is supposed to be. It's the pokey leaves I'm sure but I see deer eat cactus so, you know. The thing is, this is such a cool looking plant it will add interest to any type of garden.

Can grow up to 3-4' tall and 2-3' wide. Once established, it is pretty carefree and continues to add blooms as it matures. Tiny star flowers are a deep blue and are shaped like a globe, very interesting to look at.

Seeds need light to germinate so press them into the soil but do not cover. You can direct sow them in spring, keeping the seed bed moist until germination. You can also start the seeds indoors in pots 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Harden plants off well before planting.
