Tomato Aficionados Who Live On A Mountain - You Are Here!
The Holy Grail of The Mountains is calling... oh yeah, a red, ripe tomato!
If you have found me than you must be a wild mountain gardener looking for wild mountain seeds.  This is the place.  I specialize in tomatoes with more coming all the time.  Below are about 250 varieties that I have available now.
Our greenhouses allow us to grow tomatoes year round so I am always saving seed. Come back and check for new arrivals.
There are other things - like mountain spinach - and herbs, flowers and greens - to name a few that you can find at the end of the list.   Be sure to look at the More Wild Mountain Seed Page too.
These seeds are all grown at 8,120 feet in the Wet Mountains of South-Central Colorado.  It is high and dry baby, it is windy, and the temps fluctuate 40-50 degrees every night - and that's in summer!  We grow tomatoes totally in the open, in sustainable greenhouses, under hoops, in containers, you name it.  Some of the varieties have been saved here for eleven years, some only 1, but any amount is of huge benefit to you - the mountain tomato grower.
Those that mention being 'grown in the open' - means no cover - which is the strongest seed I carry.  That info is included in the description.
Growing adapted seed will work wonders for you folks up higher than me - and once you've grown it - you can save it too and it will remember your mountain and immediately begin to adapt and improve.

You don't have to live at high elevation to benefit from this seed - it's strong and ready for extreme growing.  It is also suitable for dry climates.

The Safe Seed Pledge:
"Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative,

We pledge that we do not knowingly buy, sell or trade genetically engineered seeds or plants.

The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms, poses great biological risks as well as economic, political, and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities."

Please take a look at OSSI - the Open Source Seed Initiative - when I grow up - I will have varieties under the OSSI - such good work!

I believe in Public Domain seeds - the seeds belong to me and to you!  Please grow, share, trade, gift seed so THE PEOPLE have food security and diversity that they can hold in their hands and pass down to their loved ones for generations to come.

MOUNTAIN ADAPTED VEGETABLES

PictureRomano II Italian Pole Beans
NEW FOR 2025!!!
Romano II Italian Pole Bean
Phaseolus vulgaris

This Italian Pole Bean is glorious!

Here is the story from Nickie Dumke, the person who so generously sent them to me in 2019. After last year's successful crop, I finally have enough to share. I'll let her tell you. 15 precious seeds per packet.

SNAP-POLE
"Flat pods with large, meaty beans, grown by my family for four generations. Very hardy, grown at sea level to at least 7600 feet elevation. Short history: My maternal grandfather, Nicolangelo Capraro, worked at the Rocky Mountain Seed Company on weekends during the Great Depression. It took three jobs to support his family of five children. In his older years, he grew enough of these beans to feed them to his children, their spouses, and thirteen grandchildren as part of a pasta dinner every Sunday. I remember Grandpa saying, “Mangia! Mangia!” (“Eat! Eat!”) as Grandma was spooning beans onto our plates. While eating and watching us eat the beans, he always said, “God bless the fagioli.” (Fagioli is beans in Italian). Older family members grew them until 2001, then there was a 10 year hiatus until my son started. I bought seeds for his birthday in January, 2011 and Rocky Mountain Seed went under in March. I began growing them in earnest in 2016."

PictureThe Farisita Pinto Bean
NEW FOR 2025!!
The Farisita Pinto Bean
Phaseolus vulgaris

This is another amazing family heirloom story and I am so happy to have enough of this delicious pinto bean to share. It is a small batch and even though the friends that gave me the seeds are encouraging me to 'just eat them', I am going to share them and grow a bigger batch this year.

My friends have told me 'this is the best pinto bean I have ever eaten' and I have shared many meals with them and they are delicious!

I've named it the Farisita Pinto Bean after the unincorporated town in Colorado where they were grown. A man named David Gnaizda grew this wonderful bean by the Huerfano River in Farisita for over 40 years. I'm still hoping to find out who gifted them to him.

He gifted them to my friends in La Veta, Co and they gifted them to me. Oh boy - I love my friends and l love seeds!

Ok - this is a small batch so you will have to do as I did, grow enough to replant and eventually grow enough to cook.
This pinto is perfect in a Three Sisters Garden, it vines about 18". It's not quite a pole bean and not quite a bush bean. I have grown them up the sunflowers but they are perfect to grow with Candy Mountain Sweet Corn because it is a very short corn. Add in either our Mountain Maxima or Northern Bush Pumpkin and you are set!

I am giving 20 seeds per packet. These seeds are precious!

PictureMountain Fava Bean
NEW FOR 2025!!!
Mountain Fava Bean
Vicia faba
Fava Beans love the mountains, they can handle cooler temperatures and even light frosts. They cross and this is another Grex, a mixture of Fava's that I have collected over the years. You will see variation in the beans but the vigor of all will be outstanding. Fava's grow quite tall - 3-4' and the pods are enormous.
In the Grex are Fava's from our good friend Jesus Flores, Farmer for the Rio Grande Farm Park in Alamosa, Co, a small batch of Joseph Lofthouse's Fava Grex and a pile of Windsor Fava's that I purchased years ago. Together they rocked and they rolled and they are a rainbow of colors and sizes.
If you've never grown them, jump back, they will burst out of the ground and grow rapidly. They are lush plants with exotic black and white flowers.
Plant them 1-2" deep and space them at least 6" apart. They are legumes of course so they will fix nitrogen and
help to build rich soil. They are also called Broad Beans.

PictureGourmet Beet Blend
NEW FOR 2025!!

Gourmet Beet Blend - Beta vulgaris    50-60 days

A beautiful array of colorful beets. Beets are easy to grow and store a long time in the fridge. This mix includes White Albino, Detroit Dark Red, Chioggia, Golden Detroit and Bull's Blood.
Direct seed 1/2" deep in spring. Beet seeds are a capsule with multiple seeds inside. You can thin them after they come up or let them work it out. As you harvest baby beets, the surrounding ones will have room to grow bigger.
Cold hardy, beets can be planted in early spring.
They can also be planted in late summer for a fall crop.

PictureBright Lights Swiss Chard
NEW FOR 2025!!

Bright Lights Swiss Chard - Beta vulgaris
60-70 days

Very easy to grow, cold hardy crop. Plant 1/2" in early spring 6-12" apart. You can eat the thinnings of course. Crunchy, juicy, brightly colored chard is highly versatile. Colors come in dark pink, yellow, orange, light pink and a few almost white.
Chard can be used like celery and adds crunch to any dish. Stems and leaves are edible.

You can add it to your cut-and-come-again greens mixtures and
harvest as baby greens or let them become mature for pounds of
produce and thick stems. Great for stir fries, cheese boards, soups
                                                                   and juicing.

PictureNational Pickling Cucumber
NEW FOR 2025!!

National Pickling Cucumber - Cucumis sativus 70-75 days

This is the perfect pickling cucumber. Harvest young, 6" fruits regularly to encourage set. Cucumbers prefer morning sun and afternoon shade, especially in the mountains. Crisp and tender with very small seeds at the pickling stage, they can also be enjoyed raw.
I mulch cucumbers heavily to keep beds evenly moist.
Cucumbers love to climb and trellising gives space in the garden and keeps them off the ground. You can let them ramble across the mulch.

Prolific, disease resistant.

Direct sow in warm soil 1/2" deep.

PictureSweet Siberian Watermelon
NEW FOR 2025!!!

Sweet Siberian Watermelon - Cirtullus lanatus
  85 days

A perfect choice for short seasons, this melon can reach 10 pounds. Good storage melon. Sweet, salmon colored flesh with a dark green, mottled skin.
Direct seed in warm soil in spring. You can cluster three seeds in mounds or spread them out and let them roam. Water as needed but do not over water. Mulch is crucial for steady moisture.
Needs three months to reach maturity. If you choose to start
indoors it is very  important to harden off the young plants for
at least a week. Do not start too early!

Collective Farm Woman Cantaloupe
80-ish days - Ukraine

Cucumis melo var. inodorus

A perfect short season cantaloupe for the mountains!  Small, greenish yellow fruits grow abundantly on vining plants. White flesh with a high sugar content. Fast, hardy-for-a-melon, this is the one to try if you think you can't grow a melon.
Adapted to cooler, short seasons.

Fruits vary in size but can be 7"-10" in diameter.
Perfect for two. Or one.

Delicious, sweet, juicy flesh cools you down in late summer heat.

Direct sow 1" deep after the soil has warmed. Plant in the warmest place you've got, melons love warmth. You can start them inside but cucurbits don't love transplanting so I prefer to direct seed. I find this helps with their fast growing momentum early on.

PictureDragon Carrot
Dragon Carrot - 70-80 days
Daucus carota

Developed by John Navazio

Gorgeous, purple, 7" carrots can tolerate any soil. Rich in antioxidants and full of flavor, Dragon Carrots are purple on the outside, orange on the inside and yellow at the core. Pretty spectacular.

Great for fresh eating, beautiful on the plate! These carrots will lose some of their color when cooked. No matter - the flavor is outstanding.

Carrots are great for the mountain garden, you can plant them in early spring and late summer. They grow beautifully in the winter
greenhouse too.

Sow seeds 1/8" - 1/4" deep and keep evenly moist through
                                                                                  germination.
Carrots can take up to two weeks to germinate
so don't give up on
                                                                                  them! Enjoy!

Colorful Carrot Mix
Daucus carota

Orange, purple and white carrots bring color and health to your plate. Carrots love the mountains and can tolerate most soil types. Sow this mix and you harvest diversity all at once!
This mix is southwest adapted, it can thrive in the high and dry. Sow seeds 1/8" - 1/4" and keep moist through germination. Carrots can take two weeks to germinate so be patient and keep watering them! We use a light mulch to help with moisture retention.

THIS MAXIMA MIX ROCKS -  WE ARE AMAZED AT HOW MANY WONDERFUL, DELICIOUS SQUASHES WE GET UP HERE AT 8,120'. BEAUTIFUL SHAPES AND DIVERSE SIZES AND COLORS.  I TOLD JOSEPH THAT WHEN WE CRACKED INTO EACH SQUASH, THEY WERE FRAGRANT AS A MELON. THEY ALSO HOLD A LONG TIME - WE CRACKED OPEN THE LAST SQUASH IN AUGUST OF THE NEXT YEAR AFTER WE GREW THEM. THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT....

Kinko 6" Chantenay Carrot - 55 days

We have loved this carrot for 32 seasons. We got the original seed from Bill McDorman back in the early 90's and when he ran out of seed, we picked up growing it out and occasionally, have enough to put it on the market. It's truly special.  Crisp, sweet, holds seemingly forever in the soil and never gets woody, it's forgiving of any soil type and that's just for starters.

Back in the day when Cord was working as a blacksmith, we would 'seal the deal' with the client by pulling up a Kinko 6" and letting them crunch it - right there on the spot.  While they were still in a delicious, carrot trance, we would get them to sign off on the iron project. It gave us clout.

Now, as seed growers, it is a long, two-year process, taking up lots of room in the garden and the fridge, it is prone to disaster, (like ground animals stealing them or horses eating all the seed right before harvest), and we often do not get much seed.  However, it has been worth it to offer this amazing carrot to the world, even on a small scale. So although the quantity will be somewhat limited, it is worth it to grow even a small patch in your garden.
Our friend Steve Peters (FAMOUS SEED GROWER), says I must clean the bearded seed better than I have in the past. So although it might still come bearded - it will be cleaner, if Steve says I must, I will.
Absolutely delicious. 14 years of adaptation.

Toma Verde Tomatillo
60 days - Annual - Open Pollinated

Once you grow tomatillos, they have a way of reseeding themselves so you always have them. Easy to grow at altitude, vigorous plants bear beautiful green, roundish, large fruits.

You can direct seed or start them 4-6 weeks before the last frost date.

Delicious - let's make some Salsa Verde!

Physalis philadelphica

70-90 days from transplant

Tomatillos are easy to grow, prolific, beautiful and they can reseed themselves if you let them. The fruits and papery husks are purple and green, so beautiful int eh garden. I let them ramble and they are almost carefree. Drought tolerant.

Easier to grow than peppers or tomatoes and a staple for salsa, enchilada sauce and many Mexican dishes.

You can direct seed in warm climates or start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Harden plants off before setting out in warm weather. Sow seeds lightly, press soil down gently.

PictureRing of Fire Cayenne Pepper
NEW FOR 2025!!
Ring of Fire Cayenne Pepper
Capsicum annuum
60 days from transplant

Incredibly early! A hot pepper for short seasons! This beloved hot pepper is a staple in most kitchens. You can make sauces, dry for flakes or add fresh to recipes.
50,000 Scoville units means it's extra hot. A little goes a long way!
Fruits are long and slender, bright red and prolific.
Start seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Sow lightly, no more than 1/4". Harden plants off well and don't set out until weather is stable and soil is warm. Place plants 2' apart. Mulch well with organic matter. Adapted to heat and can handle some drought. Up here at high-altitude, we slightly shade our peppers as high
altitude sun can scorch the leaves and fruits.

Bright red, 6" fruits on sturdy plants. Early pepper great for short seasons. Considered medium hot with a sweet, fruity flavor.
Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds 1/8-1/4" deep. Set well hardened-off plants out in stable weather and warm soil. I set them at 2' centers. We shade our peppers at 8,120' to keep them from being scorched by the high-altitude sun.
Delicious and perfect for ristras.

NEW FOR 2025!!

Za Hara Eggplant - Solanum melongena
75 days from transplant

This rare variety comes from The Sandhill Preservation Center and my original seed stock is from Vibrant Earth Seeds.

Dark, large fruits come on early - only 75 days! Eggplants need warmth. It is best to wait to set out plants until the weather is stable and the soil is warmed.

Start seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost, harden off well and set out on 2' centers. Sow seeds lightly, no more than 1/4" and press them in gently. Keep moist through germination.

PictureFrench Breakfast Radish
French Breakfast Radish
Raphanus sativus
24 days - Annual

My favorite radish! Bi-color, elongated radish grows very quickly in cool weather. Give them steady moisture and plant every few weeks for a continuous harvest. Direct seed in the garden starting 4 weeks before the last frost. Radish's can take some cold!
The shape of these are perfect for dipping and they are great for breakfast, I love them with eggs. All parts of the radish plant is edible - from the first greens to the flowers to the seed pods to sprouts.
Plant 1/4" - 1/2" deep and about 2-3" apart.
Easy to grow - delicious - not too hot and beautiful on the plate. Enjoy!

PictureDi Cicco Broccoli
Brassica oleracea
Di Cicco Broccoli

60-70 days to maturity. The best thing about De Cicco Broccoli besides the outstanding flavor is the growth habit. Beautiful plants produce nutritious greens and large solid heads of Broccoli that do not bolt quickly. In fact, they seem to hold forever, especially in the cool mountains. Broccoli likes it cool, both for germination and for growing.
After you harvest the main head, side shoots will continue to grow until well after frost. Keep harvesting, they are equally delicious.
You can start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost and you can direct sow. If you do both, you will have a succession planting as the seedlings will grow faster than the seeds, giving you a longer harvest period.
We like to interplant vase-shaped broccoli with fat-bottomd Chinese Cabbage. It makes a great relay planting.
My all-time favorite Broccoli.

Allium porrum
Leeks can be direct seeded in April or May in most elevations or you can start them indoors 3 months before the last frost. Sow 1/2" deep and space them 6" apart. Leeks are amazingly hardy and so delicious.
This cross is from the tried and true Blaugrüner Leek with Lilly's Leek, a dedicated grower from the Boulder area.
Leeks also last a very long time in the refrigerator. This is a staple crop for every kitchen. They like cool weather, perfect for the mountains. Plant in full sun.

TIPS IF IT'S OVERWHELMING:
*TOMATO SEEDS TAKE 5-15 DAYS TO GERMINATE AND THEN I STILL DON'T GIVE UP ON THEM - SEEDS IN THE SAME PACKET CAN GERMINATE AT DIFFERENT RATES - DON'T GIVE UP!
*LOOK FOR DAYS TO MATURITY TO FIT YOUR CLIMATE - MOUNTAIN PEOPLE - CHOOSE THE SHORTEST DAYS POSSIBLE
*LOOK FOR ORIGIN AND TRY TO MATCH ENVIRONMENTS
*RUSSIAN AND SIBERIAN TOMATOES ARE GREAT FOR THE MOUNTAINS
*ARIZONA, AFGHANISTAN, AUSTRIALIA AND IRAQI TOMATOES ARE GREAT FOR THE HEAT OF THE DOWN BELOW!
*MOUNTAIN PEOPLE - LONG SEASON TOMATOES - GROW IN THE GREENHOUSE
*ALSO - LONG SEASON TOMATOES - GROW IN A POT AND BRING THEM IN TO FINISH OUT IN WINTER
*A LONG SEASON TOMATO IS 80-90 DAYS
*A SHORT SEASON TOMATO IS 50-65 DAYS
*CREATE STRUCTURES, COVERS OR ENVIRONMENTS THAT TOMATOES LOVE
*HAPPY ZONE FOR A TOMATO - 55-85 DEGREES
*PROVIDING AFTERNOON SHADE IS A GOOD THING IN THE WEST - ESPECIALLY DOWN BELOW
*IF YOU HAVE TO GROW IN THE OPEN - CHOOSE FROM THE LIST ABOVE OR OTHERS THAT HAVE ALSO BEEN GROWN IN THE OPEN
*ITS BETTER TO WAIT FOR WARM SOIL AND STABLE WEATHER TO PLANT TOMATOES - TOO SOON IS SUDDEN DEATH - PATIENCE!
*AT ELEVATION - WE DON'T SET OUT TOMATOES UNTIL THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF JUNE - UNLESS ITS SNOWING

*AT ELEVATION - WE START TOMATO SEEDS ALL THROUGH APRIL - THEY ARE READY IN 4-6 WEEKS - PERFECT!
*IN 2020, WE HELD THE TOMATOES UNTIL THE TOP OF JULY - THEY FINISHED OUT IN LATE SEPTEMBER - IT WAS STILL IN THE 30'S AT NIGHT OR SNOWING ALL THROUGH JUNE
*EVERY YEAR IN COLORADO IS DIFFERENT - KEEP AN OPEN HEART AND START WITH A CLEAN SLATE

Such flavor!  "Lick-my-fingers-good."  I kept yelling wow!  Then a pause and then, WOW!  Loved the flavor of this one.  Early slicer sized red beauties with great flavor.  Crazy early it seemed.  I wrote, "Sweet flesh and tangy skin, a party in my mouth." Not bad for a newb.

Ramp up your flavor with some pots of these early birds sitting around - I think they will make you happy.

This tomato is perfect.  It sets the most uniform, perfect clusters of fruit - very impressive.  It bears heavily and easily.  It can be described as 'meaty and juicy' which seems strange but true.  Mild beginning, finishes with strong flavor. Gorgeous on the vine.

What a prolific plant! This Big/Little tomato covers itself in flowers and sets lovely 1-2 oz perfectly round red fruits. Very nice growth habit for containers and small spaces. The multitudes of fruits will make you happy. Juicy delicious.
Grown in the open at 8120' it's first year. Welcome to the mountain.

This little sucker tastes so good you will make a happy face as you taste it.  Very early, easy to grow - another great choice for a cool, short season.  I've read reports of it being somewhat drought tolerant too!  4-6 oz. red fruits born in clusters. Strong tomato flavor.

Allegory Sunset - 70 days - Canada
What a beauty! I fell in love with this tomato in my new Mothership Greenhouse. The flavor is wonderful, fruity, tropical, fragrant and sweet. The color is mesmerizing, orange/yellow with a pink or salmon inside. A new favorite for form, beauty and flavor. The fruits are large and slightly oblong, stunning. The plant grows just right, it's not a wild thing and it's not wimpy either - nice and strong and showed resistance to bugs and disease in the greenhouse.

Oooooooo this is a goody.  I jumped around the kitchen with this in my mouth.  Yeah, this was really good, sweet undertones right off the bat - but a zingy thing going on too.  Really, really good.  Sweet and zingy.
Plants are strong and sturdy and grew in the open under a tree at 8,000' it's first year.  I bow down. The flavor of this one makes it one of the stand-outs of the season.

Holy Moly what a delicious tomato for the high country.  Beautiful to behold and great flavor to boot.  Easy to grow, early, the plant is large and sprawling - needs staking to hold up the heavy load that comes with this variety.
Best part - I grew this the first year with no cover at 8,120' - not even kidding.  It did great in the open - gotta love a tomato with heart.
Firm and juicy golf ball sized tomatoes with a balanced flavor and sweet finish.  I 'taste tested' it three times - kept going back for more, the aftertaste taunted me.  Developed in the 1950's - this Wyoming Heirloom is TASTY!

Amish Paste - 85 days - Pennsylvania - Indeterminate - Heirloom

This paste tomato has been loved for generations. While it is a thick-walled cooking tomato, it has slightly more juice than the average paste which makes it a great candidate for fresh eating and for salsa. Few seeds.
Some of the 6-12 oz fruits are more elongated and some like a fat plum. Either way, this long season tomato is a classic and worth a try.
Good flavor with a sweet finish and the aftertaste hung around a good long while - a gift that keeps on coming.

BACK FOR 2025!!
Mystery Tomato of Unknown Origin

The seed for this delicious beauty came from the Taste of Tomato party in Boulder - that's right - at Harlequin's Gardens - not to be missed in the future. I smeared a few seeds from my taste-testing bite into my pocket and we grew it out. Not only is the color ridiculous but the flavor stood up to the masses, described as good balanced deep tomato flavor with thick walls. This tomato is fleshy around the outside and juicy in the middle.

We have more to learn about this mystery tomato - we are not sure if the name is correct or not but we will grow it again and share what we learn.

Big, gorgeous oxheart tomato loaded with juice and flavor.  This is a classic Russian with flavor bragging rights.  As with all oxhearts, the plant is droop-leafed - some call it 'wilted-leaf', some call it feather-leaf.  The point is - it's not a disease.  They are sprawling plants with wispy foliage.  One of the greats.

So, Mt. Roma is always my favorite paste for the mountains. But this new paste tomato whupped butt this year, coming on strong and fast. The plant was fully loaded and was one of the first tomatoes to ripen up here in the clouds. But then, the evaluation came and I was blown away.
Tangy robust flavor. Delicious aftertaste. Firm-walled – bright red – juicy.  When I tried it again, I yelled, 'so delicious'!  WOW!  For flavor – this roma is amazing!  Balanced. Just good.  Some got fat like the picture but mostly they are elongated plum-shaped tomatoes.  A new favorite.

Round to ovate fruits vary in size, but are average chicken-egg size.  Incredibly delicious. Very tolerant to high heat and humidity, diseases, dry periods and cracking.  Excellent for eating fresh, canning, stewing, dehydrating.  Fruit stores and ships well, hence the name, “Traveler”.  Large, open seed chambers make seed saving easy.  Firm, thick-walled flesh.  5-petaled flowers on 5-6’ vines.  Killed by freezing.  Tender perennial, grown as an annual crop.  Open Pollinated Heirloom.  Original seed from ThunderFoot and these are his words.

Another incredible tomato from Brad Gates of Wild Boar Farms. The colors are amazing - the picture shown here does not do it justice, golden brown finishes the color parade. The flavor was outstanding - I kept writing, "smoooooooth - well balanced, sweeeeeet."
Lavender, purple, then goes green, reddish-brown, with anthocyanin blue stripes when it's done. I mean c'mon!
He calls it a large cherry but it's almost a plum type. The foliage is wispy and wild like most oxhearts and puts on a mighty load.

There is some confusion about this killer tomato.  It's so good it makes my mouth water just thinking about it.  It's the darkest thing I've ever seen - absolutely beautiful deep, dark color.  The flavor is succulent - like fine wine but more sweet.  Luscious.  A new favorite for flavor. Sandhill Preservation Center sells both Black Crimson and Black Krim as different tomatoes.  The seeds I grow are different too.  So I'll let you decide - grow them side-by-side and run your own trial. I think they

Bucket Mix –  48-90 days - Colorado

Saving tomato seed requires a ‘wet save’ – fermenting the seeds, then rinsing them clean with water. I catch the seed water into a bucket to pour on the compost. There is always good seed left in the bottom of the buckets and I can't throw it away so – this is every variety I grow.  Whenever a tomato gets lost -  falls off the vine - it goes in the mixed bucket and the seed is saved together - another reason for the name.

This tomato was discovered by two separate people, one in the US and the other in Canada. What a delicious find!  The color of this tomato is truly luscious, almost fluorescent - and the flavor is wonderful.  True tomato flavor, with a bit of that old fashioned 'zing' we love.  Makes a wonderful canner or slicer.  Firm tomatoes with strong walls makes it easy to slice.  Plenty of meat for cooking too - I made a beautiful sauce - sometimes I pull it out of the freezer just to look at the audacious color.
Can get quite large, 6-12 ounces.

When you cut them open through the equator the color is at it's best - be sure to take a pic.

Goluboy Les - 69 days - Russia - Translates to "Blue Forest"

Sent to me from Dale Thurber of Delectation of Tomatoes - another wild tomato collector. Thanks Dale - he told me this was a good one and he was right! Unlike many 'indigo' colored tomatoes, this one stands out for flavor.

These are my notes:
Beautiful, exotic color.  The seed gel is a coppery, burnt orange, but outside it’s dark blue (indigo), to exotic red.  Great flavor to start – a bit sweet and delicious and then it was like it released a salty finish.  Like it salted itself after the initial flavor.  Very interesting.  Highly prolific, almost  early – beautiful.  WOW.
Tomatoes are not ripe until the butts turn red.

PictureHigh Country
High Country - early - Montana

This elusive, luscious paste tomato has finally been restored to my memories of it from the early days. Offered by Bill McDorman way back when, (the 90's), it either changed, or got lost and I missed it terribly.  I hunted it down through the Seed Saver's Exchange, (of course), securing original seed and grew it out this year.  Oh my - such a beauty!  The color is a feast for the eyes - dark, deep red, I described the flavor as 'luscious', it's prolific, and fast.  My notes also said juicy and when a 'roma' type tomato is juicy, it just means flavor and maybe cooking the sauce down for a few more minutes. It also means it's a good tomato for fresh eating so go ahead and make pico de gallo. 'Teardrop' shaped.

Ahhhhhh.  I love restoring these long lost friends.

You'll love it too.

Italy’s favorite sun-drying tomato, they throw the plant over a fence to dry on the vine.  I dried mine in the coat rack. Good snack.

This tomato really shined last year - it's yummy, yummy, yummy.

This little plant is really interesting.  The tomatoes are supposed to be red but I found them to be more multi-colored than that - hard to describe - I'll  let the picture do the talking.  As with any dwarf - they are fun, fun, fun to grow.  Throw in a little Shakespeare and you start to feel really smug with yourself when you grow it - a nice conversation piece.  A tiny plant with rugosa foliage, it will look and grow great in a container.  A Mid-Summer Night's Dream.

This is a groovy find.  It's a hottie - it will not perform well in cold or wet conditions - this little guy likes it hot - perfect for down below in Colorado.  Preferred for paste making as it is meaty with little juice.  Great tomatoey flavor makes it an excellent cooking tomato.  Compact plant produces over a long period - comes on early - goes out late.
Originally collected from the Punta Banda Peninsula in Baja California.

Purple Bumblebee Cherry - 60-70 days - California
These beautiful and delicious cherry tomatoes are from Artisan Seeds - breeders in California making magic mixing colors and flavors. I yelled when I tried one. Winey in the good way. Deep tomato flavor with that plummy, grapey, winey thing going on. Very delicious and sweet. Very happy with the short-season too. Did great at 8,000.
These will dress up your plate if they make it that far. Perfect for gobbling. Seems like kids would just love the beautiful color.
A keeper.

I will grow this again.  Elongated 4-9 oz. purple plum tomatoes on wild and wispy vines. Heavy loads of a multi-purpose tomato makes this a great market tomato.

Another save from Aziz Nael - trying to help preserve lost Iraqi seed diversity.  Keeping these varieties going is a great connection we can have with other gardeners from around the world.  The fact that half of Colorado is hot and high elevation makes this a good choice.   This tomato should be able to take the heat.  This is a beautiful fluted or lobed tomato - squatty, beefsteaky and red.  It did well at 7,500' in the open but my guess is - it will do even better down below.  (5,000' - the other half of Colorado - where it gets incredibly hot but it's still high elevation.)

Sart Roloise - 75 days - Belgium - Indeterminate

I like a beautiful tomato but sometimes I am skeptical about the flavor. Holy Pretty Tomato - this tomato was absolutely delicious! Here's what I wrote on the taste test:

"Fruity, tangy, slightly sweet, complex, bold, tomatoey, and the aftertaste is making my mouth water right now – for a looooong time."
Here's the research I found:
Created by Roland Boulanger in 2012, Sart Eustache, Belgium. He crossed the large white beefsteak ‘White Wonder’ with an anthocyanin cherry tomato ‘Baby Blue’ and received a very impressive and very tasty variety.

One of the stars of the season - fruits can get much bigger! Outstanding.

Start seeds indoors 4-8 weeks before the last frost.

Schimeigg Stoo means "Striped Cavern" in Manx, Tom Wagner's maternal grandmother's language.  Many years ago it was called T-1.  Schimeigg Stoo is a hollow, 'pepper' tomato - excellent for stuffing.   It is striped - red with golden stripes.  It does not seem to have deep flavor but it is loved for it's stuffing ability.  I love it because I love Tom Wagner's work and I love unusual tomatoes.  Having a stuffing tomato so unusual and pretty will grace your plate and tempt your friends to try something different.  Oooh - I want some chicken salad - right now.  Can and will get bigger than the picture.

Shadow Boxing (Dwarf) - 55 days - Washington - Dwarf Indeterminate!

Okay - this is really cool.  This is Tom Wagner land where tomatoes are allowed to have sex and make babies.  In fact, they are encouraged to.  Tom is straight up about whether a variety is stable or not or whether you might see sports.  First of all - I've never heard of a dwarf indeterminate before.  This means it continues to produce tomatoes on a very manageable-sized plant.  Determinates set fruit all at once, and usually dwarfs are determinate.  All of Tom's tomatoes are known for their disease resistance - as well as incredible colors.  The color here does not exactly match Tom's picture but the deeper color is fantastic so I'm not complaining.  The flavor was very good - tomatoey with a 'blue' finish.  So beautiful...

PictureSiberian Pink Honey

Siberian Pink Honey - early - Russia - Indeterminate

Sounds like the name of a groovy rock and roll band.  This tomato is a Rock Star!  This is a big, glorious oxheart - yeah, an oxheart, with it's wispy foliage hanging over with huge heart-shaped beauties.  I couldn't stop taking pictures of them. Expect 1-2 lbs - depending on growing conditions.

No better way to say it - here are my exact notes:
"Well Hello!  Nice to meetcha!  What a starlet – a superstar – a great beauty.  Perfect pink/red hearts – oxhearts, big, hefty, juicy, lovely, irresistible. One of the stand-outs in this difficult climatic year.  At first I thought “lightly sweet and refreshing" – code for weak flavor.  But then the aftertaste came and kicked ass – smoothed out – went sweeter and finished wanting more.  So a winner."

It's true - I wanted to smear this one all over my face.
