Kinko 6" Chantenay Carrot - 55 days
Daucus carota
We have loved this carrot for 29 seasons. We got the original seed from Bill McDorman back in the early 90's and when he ran out of seed, we picked up growing it out and occasionally, have enough to put it on the market. It's truly special. Crisp, sweet, holds seemingly forever in the soil and never gets woody, it's forgiving of any soil type and that's just for starters.
Back in the day when Cord was working as a blacksmith, we would 'seal the deal' with the client by pulling up a Kinko 6" and letting them crunch it - right there on the spot. While they were still in a delicious, carrot trance, we would get them to sign off on the iron project. It gave us clout.
Now, as seed growers, it is a long, two-year process, taking up lots of room in the garden and the fridge, it is prone to disaster, (like ground animals stealing them or horses eating all the seed right before harvest), and we often do not get much seed. However, it has been worth it to offer this amazing carrot to the world, even on a small scale. So although the quantity will be limited, it is worth it to grow even a small patch in your garden.
Our friend Steve Peters (FAMOUS SEED GROWER), says I must clean the bearded seed better than I have in the past. So although it might still come bearded - it will be cleaner, if Steve says I must, I will.
Absolutely delicious.
