Nasturtium Mix - "Alaska" - Dwarf
BACK FOR 2024!
Nasturtium - Trapaeolum nanum - Annual
Oooo lala! Such a showy Nasturtium! Variegated leaves set off the the brightly colored flowers beautifully. Tones of red, yellow and orange make for fun mounds of goodness. They grow to 12".
The Nasturtium plant is edible and delicious! We use them on salads and sandwiches. The round, green and white leaves are hot and spicy - kind of like mustard and go great with hors d' oeuvres or as the hors d' oeuvres. I often use them as little wraps on the cheese board.
The flowers have spice along with a lovely sweetness and I really love those on the salad but they could also be stuffed with chèvre and a bit of honey. So divine. When the seeds are green they can be pickled as a substitute for capers.
We think of this plant as another vegetable and we also use it as a trap crop to protect the squash from squash bugs. So far, no squash bugs, and the two plants look beautiful together.
Easy to grow, direct seed in place or start inside 2-4 weeks before the last frost date. They germinate and grow quickly and easily. Some people nick or soak the seeds before planting, but I have never needed to.
