NEW! New Mexico Privet
NEW FOR 2024!
New Mexico Privet - Forestiera pubescens var. neomexicana - Perennial
Ooooowheeeee! Seeing this fruiting shrub fully loaded is a sight to behold. The berries cover the plant and are thickly clustered. Deep, dark blue fruits are beloved by birds. It can grow 8-12' high and 6-8' wide. It grows in arroyos, canyons and valleys. Plants are male and female (dioecious), and you need both to produce fruit. Both sexes flower. It is a handsome plant no matter though, with yellow leaves in the fall and light grey branches.
It is drought tolerant but will grow bigger with good irrigation. It is hardy to Zone 4 and is highly adaptable.
This plant can be pruned to be more tree-like or more shrub-like. Makes a great wind break or hedge.
Stratify seed for 30 days and plant in pots. You can overwinter them in pots and plant out when they are a couple of years old.
