Prairie Sunflower - Helianthus petiolaris - Annual
This happy sunflower grows best in sandy soils, it likes dunes, sunny roadsides and disturbed sites. I see it high and low. Smaller than our most common (and beloved) wild sunflower, it blooms it's head(s) off in mass displays summer to fall. I've always loved this flower as a daintier version of bright golden sunflowers.
Plant in fall or stratify for 45 days. You can direct seed them here and there in sunny locations in fall and winter or start in pots after stratification 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Plant out after all danger of frost is over.
